The Estes Park countryside is probably the most beautiful you will ever see, and when hiking season comes around, you can bet that we at Voyago Vacation Rentals spend more time on the trails than we do at home. Fortunately, our families are hiking right alongside us, and if your vacation journey brings you to Estes Park for a hiking getaway, you too can bring your family along for the hike. But before you start, remember that safety matters, and this Estes Park hiking guide and safety tips will help keep you and your family secure as you explore our stunning landscape. We will help ensure that your trip will be one you never forget.
Better Safe Than Sorry
A hike may feel like nothing more than a strenuous walk, but in the Rocky Mountains, it can be much more than that. Of course, there are the views, the panoramic beauty of the mountains, meadows, and grassy fields, but there is also heat in the summer months, wild animals that may look cuddly but should definitely be avoided, and extreme elevation changes that people with mobility issues may have trouble maneuvering. These tips we share below are some of the most important ones.
• Know Your Limitations – There are no sidewalks or stairs to be found on the trails that meander through the Estes Park area, but there can be elevation changes that can be thousands of feet, so knowing your limitations and doing your research to stick to easier trails is important. The website All Trails provides a great synopsis of the different trails in the area, but we will give you a little info on some of our favorites later down the page.
• Drink Plenty of Water – Summer temps in this region can get pretty high, and staying hydrated can ensure a successful hike. Additionally, we are in a high elevation area and most people don’t know that drinking lots of water before and after the hike can help lessen the chances of getting altitude sickness.
• Wear the Proper Gear – Make sure your shoes have good grip on the soles, that they fit well, and that they support your ankle; nothing puts a damper on the situation like a twisted or sprained ankle. Also, the sun in Estes Park can be quite ferocious, and sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat can be your best hiking gear ever.
• Stay on the Trails – Taking a picture of that butterfly flying through the wildflowers may offer up a frame-worthy shot, but the wild parts of the area also harbor wild creatures, including snakes and bears. Staying on the trails can keep you safe while also ensuring that you don’t get lost, especially as cell phones aren’t always going to have a signal out here.
Trails for All Skill Levels
Now that you have a better understanding of the pitfalls that could be involved with a hike in the Estes Park area, it’s time to have fun. We’ve listed three of our favorites below, including an easy, moderate, and advanced trail to whet your interest.
• Alberta Falls Trail – Lasting just 2.6 miles out and back and offering an elevation gain of only 226 feet, the Alberta Falls Trail gives a lot of bang for the buck, featuring panoramic views, a waterfall, and a river that runs through it. This trail is very kid friendly.
• Emerald Lake Trail – Next on our list is Emerald Lake Trail, increasing in distance to 3.2 miles and offering an elevation gain of 702 feet, it is also another out-and-back trail. The reward at the halfway point of your hike is, of course, the appearance of Emerald Lake, offering clear waters and the feel of being on an alien planet, in part due to the trees in the area. This trail is also kid friendly and is one of the most popular hikes in Estes Park.
• Chasm Lake Trail – This last trail is, of course, the most difficult of the three listed. 8 miles long out and back and offering an elevation gain of 2552 feet, this is definitely not a hike that should be considered an option for young kids or people who aren’t in prime shape, but if you are in the best shape of your life and you want to enjoy an adventure you will never forget, this hike is for you.

There are plenty of indoor activities and attractions that are sure to keep you and the whole family occupied. Take a look at some kid friendly indoor activities in Estes Park:
Estes Park Aquatic Center
Estes Park is a top summer destination, and you will find that plenty of our vacation rentals offer pool side fun. However, that fun can be put to a rest if the day takes a turn with some unexpected rain. Don’t worry as you can still enjoy some pool fun when you head over to Estes Park Aquatic Center. This local aquatic center offers an indoor swimming complex that lets you splash around in the water while avoiding the rain. Make sure to check out the hours to see if they are open during your visit!
Visit a Local Museum
If you want to take your kids somewhere exciting while still having a learning experience, look no further than the local museums. The Estes Park Museum is simply named so you can understand all things Estes Park. This mountain town got its start with the local Native American tribes. You can learn all about the sense of community here along with interactive displays and exhibits that go into detail of local artists and the Rocky Mountains. Or check out Moraine Park Museum nearby that sits at the northeast corner of Moraine Park. The onsite outdoor amphitheater is used as a beautiful wedding and special event venue during clear weather. The onsite museum is what you want to visit during the rain where you can learn about native plant life and interpretation programs. Don’t miss out on these educational yet exciting local museums perfect for a rainy day!
See a Movie
If your family cannot agree on somewhere to go to hide out from the rain, you can always just see a movie. Heading to your local cinema has always been an incredible family experience and the same continues when you visit Estes Park. Check out Reel Mountain Theater right here in Estes Park to find the latest hit movies playing. They have several different giant screens showing all of the favorite hits. The summer season is an especially great time to check out the movies, as most of the year’s biggest movies are released at this time. A night at the movies has never been so fun, especially here in Estes Park.
Tour the Stanley Hotel
Speaking of movies, a local attraction in the area is where the idea of “The Shining” was created. That’s right, Stephen King himself visited the Stanley Hotel right here in Estes Park to spark the creativity for his eventual novel and movie adaption. The Stanley Hotel offers daily tours from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM where you can check out all of the “spooky” spots in the hotel that inspired a masterpiece. While it may sound spooky, it is perfectly family friendly!
