If you are looking for your gateway into the Rocky Mountains and a whole lot of fun, you need to make your way to Estes Park. We are a top Colorado destination that features tons of outdoor adventures for everyone. Expenses can quickly add up when planning for any vacation getaway, but a great way to offset some costs is by finding plenty of free Estes Park activities to add to your itinerary. Here are some of the top free things to do in Estes Park no matter when you visit:
Check Out the Estes Park Riverwalk
If you want to see one of the most scenic areas of Estes Park, consider making your way to the Riverwalk. You will find this paved path taking you through Downtown Estes Park before it runs next to the Big Thompson and Fall Rivers. During your walk, you will find all kinds of shops and galleries that you can window shop. The Riverwalk features plenty of benches you can stop at to take in the scenic overlooks. You will find this area of town to be a relaxing and peaceful spot to check out. The sound of rushing water is always a popular feeling with the rivers flowing at their highest in the spring. Or check out the Riverwalk during the fall season as the color of the leaves change into vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. There is no bad time of year to check out the Estes Park River.
Take in the Scenic Views and Overlook
Estes Park is a destination that is complete with all kinds of views that you will want to see to believe. During your visit drive around to the different scenic overlooks where you can see the mountains at no cost. You will find that scenic overlooks offer free parking spots along with picnic tables to enjoy a meal with your family. Some of our favorite overlooks can be found over at Lily Lake just along Highway 7 along with Lake Estes Marina. You can expect to find panoramic views from the vistas as both area. These are must-see areas for any photographers in your family.
Explore the Historic Stanley Hotel rounds
Estes Park has a surprising connection to Hollywood as the historic Stanley Hotel here in the area was featured in The Shining. Don’t let the movie spook you away from checking out this historic site that was rumored to be paranormal while the movie filmed on the premises. Visitors can tour the Stanley Hotel for a fee but walking around the hotel grounds outdoors is completely free. You will be able to enjoy the stunning architecture of the building along with the sweeping mountain views. You can even peek inside to see the vintage lobby and atmosphere that the movie featured.
Enjoy the Free Events Throughout the Year
Estes Park is not just about free activities but also free events that you can attend all year long. You and your family can attend a variety of events right here in the area. The Estes Park Elk Fest takes place during the fall season that coincides with the elk hunting season. You will find this event complete with live music, educational booths, and storytelling all for free. The Estes Park Jazz Fest in the month of May provides all kinds of free live jazz performances found here in town. Frozen Dead Guy Days in March is a quirky winter event that is still new to the area. It features all kinds of free entertainment and events. Last but not least is the Glow Holiday Parade in November that features all kinds of holiday lights and floats to help kick off the holiday season with.
Check Out Local Hiking Trails
Entry into the Rocky Mountain National Park will always require a fee so if you wish to see the area for free you can check out other hiking trails. One of our favorite trails is the Lily Mountain Trail that offers a moderately challenging experience that rewards you with panoramic views of Estes Valley and Longs Peak. Kruger Rock Trail is another great trail to hit up. If you enter Hermit Park from your vehicle there will be an entrance fee but you can avoid this by walking into the park. There are also local promotions throughout the year that will also offer free entry. Estes Lake Trail will take you around Lake Estes that is great for biking anytime of the year.
More Free Fun Right Here in Estes Park
Don’t miss out on all of this fun right here in the area. Reach out to us today to book our Estes Park vacation rentals, which will offer you a fantastic experience during your stay. There is no better way to enjoy Estes Park.
Your vacation in Estes Park is going to be filled with adventures of all types, including, if you are so inclined, road trips just waiting to be taken. This part of Colorado is known for its stunning landscape, its wonderful attractions, and for the charm of the small towns that are in the area and the locals here (and yes, that includes us at Voyago Vacation Rentals) love to take little voyages to all the most wonderful places. This guide to the top Estes Park day trips you can take—trips that begin in Estes Park and end right back where you started—has been curated from tips and hints that we received from staff, friends, and other Estes Park locals!
Wildlife Watching in Sheep Lakes
Located inside Horseshoe Park, Sheep Lakes is a beautiful part of the park, offering the water that attracts all the wildlife, and although it is technically still within city limits and it really won’t take all day to enjoy all this area has to offer, it’s has many benefits, including a short drive and the opportunity to see the wildlife in the area. We like to take our families to the parking lot that overlooks the lakes, packing a picnic, and for those of us who have smaller children, games to play. And we just sit and wait for the animals to come to us. Over the years we have spotted and photographed moose, coyotes, elk, and of course, the bighorn sheep that are the lake’s namesake. Sunrise and sunset are when the wildlife really get active, so consider scheduling your visit during those times and be prepared to be amazed at the wildlife you will spot.
A Scenic Drive Along the Trail Ridge Road
The Trail Ridge Road is a popular one, noted as the highest continuous paved highway and offering stunning views of the Rocky Mountains, practically around every turn. Open for cars May through October, in the off months, bicyclists love to ride this road and pedestrians love to walk along it, but in the height of summer, it is all about the drive. Offering multiple scenic overlooks, we advise our guests to stop, take pictures, and soak in the natural beauty that makes this area one of the top tourist destinations in the world. The Alpine Visitor’s Center is one such overlook, located above the tree line so you will feel as if you are on top of the world!
Journey to Nederland
The town of Nederland boasts a population of less than 2000 people and a lifestyle that is serene, calm, and happy, especially as it home to what they call the Carousel of Happiness, a 1910 carousel that has been fully restored to its original glory. 57 hand-carved and hand-painted animals continue their circuit thousands of times in a day, “dancing” to the tunes played by a restored 1913 Wurlitzer band organ, and as you ride your chosen “steed” (an ostrich, a pig, a giraffe, and a panda are amongst some of your choices), you will learn why it is named what it is named. It’s impossible not to be happy on this bright, colorful, and cheerful carousel!
Discover the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway
The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is a 55-mile stretch of road offering views of the Front Range (a mountain range that is a part of the Southern Rocky Mountains) and the Continental Divide, while also providing peeks into the lives of the wildlife that inhabits the area. This byway is Colorado’s oldest scenic byway, having been established in 1918, and is beautiful year-round, making a summer drive a wonderful one, but if you truly want to see it at its most colorful, we suggest a return trip in the fall! Or, as this article will be “hitting the stands” sometime in August, it is quite possible your visit will fall during prime leaf viewing season, late September through early October, and if that is case, you have timed it perfectly!
All Roads Lead Home to Voyago Vacation Rentals
Whether you decide to take short Estes Park day trips to any of the parks in the area or decide you really want to take a road trip and hit the road for a two-hour drive to Sulphur Hot Springs (that’s an experience you will never forget!) realizing that all roads lead back home to our Voyago Vacation Rentals Colorado sanctuaries will bring you joy! Soothe your aching muscles by soaking in hot tubs, wind down by sitting near the fireplace and quietly watching the flames flicker, even in the summer months. And when sleep wins and you crawl into the most comfortable beds in the state, you will feel at ease, at home, and ready for happy dreams. Reserve your favorite Estes Park cabin rental today!
In much of the world, the heat of summer is turned up a few more notches by the time August rolls around, but here in Estes Park, our weather is already turning to fall. Warm days fold into nights so cool, the temperatures will often drop near freezing, offering the perfect contrast in wonderful, as this contradiction allows guests to utilize all the amenities our Voyago Vacation Rentals seasonal sanctuaries have to offer. August may be the local’s favorite time of year, and if your journey brings you to our mountain home at that time, this guide on how to do August in Estes Park like a local will help you enjoy the most joyful Estes Park August vacation of all.
First We Sip Wine at the Estes Park Wine Festival, August 9th & 10th, Bond Park
A good wine adds a spark of wonderful to a summer day, and the Estes Park Wine Festival allows us to sip all the wines while listening to live music, devouring delectable food, and even get a little pre-holiday shopping done, as the vendors open booths filled with arts, crafts, and gifts. (Christmas is only 138 days away!) Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online, with General Admission tickets providing a wine glass, a wine tote, and unlimited tastings as well as access to all vendors and music. VIP tickets include VIP tent entry with catered food and wine bar.
Then We Splash Around at Lake Estes
The water is already beginning to cool down, but when the sun shines and the mercury rises to a comfortable 78 degrees, we and our families often find ourselves heading to the lake for a day of fun in the sun and water. Lake Estes Marina rents a generous selection of boats, including pontoon, fishing, and kayaks, and canoes, and if you want to get a little workout in during your lake activities, they also rent out paddleboards. Sometimes we hike the trail that surrounds the lake, and most times we pack a picnic, as there are also picnic tables at the lake. Visitors can also swim, relax on the sandy beach by the marina, or even join in a pick-up game of beach volleyball—there’s no end to the amount of fun that can be had at Lake Estes on an August day.
Sometimes We Eat a LOT
The restaurants of Estes Park are known to be some of the best in the state, and although you can create your own self-guided tour of deliciousness, Estes Park Tour Guides offers a four-hour food and drink tour that allows you to sample a little bit of everything. You can always return to the restaurants that interest you most at a later time, living like a local when you find “your place,” but early on in your Estes Park journey, the tour may be the best way to get your feet wet!
Hiking Saves the Day
The way we look at it, we could constantly count calories and miss out on the fun a good meal can bring, or we can eat all we want and hike away all the excess calories we have consumed. If you see things the way we do, in addition to the Lake Estes Trail we mentioned earlier, you may want to explore the Lumpy Ridge Trail, which features panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. You can also push yourself to complete the extremely hard Sky Pond via the Glacier Gorge Trail; offering an elevation gain of 1700+ feet, the 8.6-mile-long trail offers waterfalls, lakes, creeks, and canopies of trees to help ease the pain of all the extra steps.
And Then We Sip Some More
The perfect way to end a day of Colorado adventures is by sipping and savoring the cool of the night, and places like The Slab-Outdoor Pub, located at 116 E Elkhorn Avenue, let us do it in style. The Slab is technically a beer garden that serves pub grub, and it does close relatively early (9 or 10 PM), so if you have the urge to sip a little later, the Wheel Bar, 132 E Elkhorn Avenue, stays open until 2 AM and offers the full bar experience.
But Mostly We Relax and Take It Easy in Estes Park in August
Because our Voyago Vacation Rentals Estes Park escapes are designed to bring comfort and fun to all who reside within, you too can follow in the footsteps of the locals. Offering hot tubs on decks overlooking the breathtaking Estes Park landscape, ping pong, pool, or even foosball tables for some extra entertainment, and fireplaces in living rooms and some bedrooms, state of the art televisions, and gourmet kitchens equipped with high-end appliances, staying in and relaxing won’t make you feel like you’re missing out on anything—it will make you feel that you are enjoying EVERYTHING. Reserve your favorite August cabin in Estes Park today!
Sometimes, when we think back on our favorite vacation memories, many of the bright spots revolve around the food we ate. We become more adventurous in our travels, trying out foods we’ve never experienced before, just as we are visiting new places we have never visited before, and when your summer journey brings you to our Voyago Vacation Rentals in the town of Estes Park, your dining adventures are sure to be memorable ones. This guide to must-try Estes Park restaurants will make your mouth water and your stomach grumble that you aren’t feeding it these wonderful meals right now!
Bison Tacos at Ed’s Cantina & Grill, 390 E Elkhorn Avenue
Tacos are the world’s obsession, and we personally feel that no one does tacos like Ed’s Cantina & Grill. If you have never tried bison meet, we are thrilled to introduce you to the delicacy! First of all, bison meat is lower in fat and cholesterol, so it is a healthy protein choice, but when you eat Mexican food, do you really care about fat and cholesterol? These delicious tacos, made with a crispy corn shell, Pico de Gallo, and cheese, will put some spice into your life and perhaps spoil you against all other taco meats!
Homemade Biscuits and Gravy at Big Horn Restaurant, 401 W Elkhorn Avenue
Our mamas taught us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and apparently the owners at Big Horn restaurant agree! Offering a menu filled with hearty and delicious breakfast foods, including a monster-sized breakfast burrito that we considered choosing for our favorite meal. The homemade biscuits, however, topped with homemade sausage gravy, are a habit we don’t want to kick, and we bet that you too will fall in love at first bite!
Spicy All Game Elk Burger at Elevations Eatery & Bar, 153 E Elkhorn Avenue
We really are trying to take you out of your comfort zone during your unforgettable vacation in Estes Park, first with the bison tacos, and now with the spicy all game elk burger at Elevations Eatery & Bar. Served on a pillowy brioche bun, the elk patty is topped with pepper jack cheese AND wild game boar sausage, which adds an extra kick you will soon begin to crave. For those looking for something a little lighter, their Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl is a game changer!
Dirty Martini Artichoke & Spinach Dip @Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ, 820 Moraine Avenue
Sometimes you just want to share some appetizers as you sip cold craft beers, and although the barbecue served at Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ is some of the best BBQ we have ever tasted, you may be equally delighted with snacking on their Dirty Martini Artichoke & Spinach Dip. Made with a blend of cheeses that now includes bleu cheese, garlic, cream, spinach, roasted green chiles, and artichoke hearts, we don’t really care to know the calorie count and while on vacation you shouldn’t have to worry about that either!
Huckleberry Oreo Ice Cream at Pines & Cones Ice Cream, 125 Moraine Avenue
It’s summer, of COURSE, you want ice cream, and Pines & Cones Ice Cream, one of Estes Park’s newest ice cream shops, has already won our hearts, offering homemade ice cream and their own waffle cones. Every flavor is worthy of trying, but the blend of huckleberries and Oreos is a unique one that tastes so good you will dream about it long after you have returned to real life.
Cherry Streusel Pie at the Colorado Cherry Company, Stanley Hotel
The Stanley Hotel is famous for a lot of things, including its longevity, its starring role in a very popular horror movie, and the fact that the hotel is very much haunted, but here in town, we also appreciate it for the Colorado Cherry Company café that does business from inside the hotel. Offering all the pies in all the flavors and a variety of what they call pie pockets (small, handheld pies that slightly resemble the ones that used to come in wax paper that you remember from your youth). But it is their cherry streusel pie that we hope you try, savoring the tart and sweet treat that has been a mainstay for the Colorado Cherry Company throughout 4 generations of ownership.
Your Family Recipes Made at Home in our Voyago Vacation Rentals

Our fully equipped kitchens might just bring a tear to the eye of the chef that is hiding within, offering high-end appliances, plenty of counterspace, and the vibe of the heart of the home. If summer has you dreaming of crisp mountain air, stunning views, and time spent unplugged, Estes Park should be at the top of your list. Tucked beside Rocky Mountain National Park, it is a place where nature and small-town charm come together. You will find hiking trails, scenic drives, and wildlife watching all within reach. Whether you are planning a family vacation, couple’s getaway, or solo retreat, Estes Park in the summer has the fresh air and freedom that the season calls for.
1. The Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park
Estes Park is more than just a pretty mountain town. It is the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the most visited and beloved parks in the country. Summer is the perfect season to explore it. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved road in any national park, opens up to panoramic views and alpine tundra that feels like another world.
There are over 300 miles of hiking trails to choose from, ranging from easy lakeside strolls to challenging climbs that reward you with unforgettable summit views. Popular hikes like Bear Lake, Alberta Falls, and Emerald Lake offer easy access and big payoffs. For those seeking solitude, there are plenty of quiet trails off the main path waiting to be discovered.
Wildlife sightings are almost guaranteed. You might spot elk grazing in open meadows, mule deer near the trail, or a marmot sunning itself on a rock. The park’s rangers offer daily programs to help visitors learn more about the area, from geology to local ecosystems.
You do not have to be an expert hiker to enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park. There are drives, lookouts, and easy walking paths that anyone can enjoy. Estes Park puts it all within minutes of your doorstep, making it an ideal base for park adventures all summer long.
2. Mild Weather and Stunning Scenery
If the summer heat gets to you, Estes Park offers a welcome break. At over 7,500 feet in elevation, this mountain town stays cool and comfortable even during the warmest months. Days are usually sunny and dry with highs in the 70s and 80s, while nights are crisp and perfect for sitting by a fire or soaking in a hot tub.
The scenery is the kind you never get used to. Majestic peaks rise in every direction. Clear lakes reflect the blue sky. Aspen groves shimmer in the breeze. Even a quick walk around town comes with sweeping views that make you pause and take it all in.
If you enjoy photography, you will find inspiration everywhere. Sunrise over the mountains, moody afternoon clouds rolling through the valleys, and golden hour lighting up the landscape. This is a place where you will want your camera ready.
The air is clean and refreshing. Every breath feels like it clears your head. Whether you are lounging on a cabin porch or paddling across a quiet lake, the natural setting makes it easy to relax.
Estes Park’s scenery is stunning and accessible. You do not have to venture far to experience it. It is right there when you wake up and still there as the stars come out. That constant connection to the outdoors is what makes Estes Park in the summer feel different from anywhere else.
3. Endless Outdoor Activities
Estes Park is made for people who like to spend their days outside. From sunrise to sunset, you will find plenty of ways to get moving, try something new, or just enjoy nature at your own pace. Hiking may be the big draw, but it is only the beginning.
The area’s lakes and rivers make water activities a summer favorite. Go kayaking on Lake Estes, take a guided fly-fishing trip on the Big Thompson River, or rent a paddleboard and glide across calm water surrounded by mountain peaks. You can even try whitewater rafting nearby for more of a thrill.
Rock climbing is big here too, with routes for every experience level. Estes Park has climbing guides and gear shops to help you get started safely. You can also sign up for guided hikes, birdwatching walks, or outdoor yoga sessions in the fresh mountain air.
Even if your idea of adventure is simply sitting outside with a cold drink, the setting makes it special. Summer in Estes Park means every day is wide open and waiting, no matter how you choose to fill it.
4. A Downtown That Blends Charm and Local Flavor
Estes Park’s downtown area is packed with personality. It is the kind of place where you can grab an ice cream cone, browse shops, and hear live music all within a few blocks. What makes it different is how seamlessly it blends local flavor with the easygoing feel of a mountain town.
You will find family-owned shops selling everything from handmade jewelry to local art to outdoor gear. There are cozy bookstores, souvenir stands, and even old-fashioned candy counters. Walk along the Riverwalk and you will pass patios filled with people enjoying coffee, craft beer, or just the sound of the rushing water.
Dining is just as diverse. You can grab a burger with a mountain view, settle in for a farm-to-table meal, or take the kids out for pizza. Local breweries and distilleries serve up drinks made right here in the Rockies, and many have outdoor seating perfect for a summer afternoon.
Live music and seasonal events add to the vibe. Outdoor concerts, art walks, and the weekly farmers market bring both locals and visitors together. Estes Park has that rare balance of being active without being overwhelming. You can enjoy the energy of town one minute and retreat to quiet nature the next.
The best part is you do not need a plan. Downtown Estes is built for wandering. Just follow your curiosity, take your time, and enjoy whatever you stumble into along the way.
5. Perfect for Families, Couples, and Groups
Estes Park works for just about any type of summer traveler. Families love the safe, walkable layout and the variety of activities that appeal to all ages. Couples come for the romantic scenery, cozy restaurants, and peaceful places to unwind. Groups of friends or extended families will find plenty of space to spread out, reconnect, and make memories together.
Kid-friendly adventures are everywhere. Easy nature trails, wildlife watching, mini golf, and lakeside playgrounds keep little ones entertained without the need for screens. Teens and adults will find plenty of thrill in hiking, rafting, or climbing. It is a great way to unplug and share time that feels genuinely meaningful.
For couples, the setting could not be better. Early morning walks, stargazing, and evenings spent around the fire are simple pleasures that feel even more special in the mountains. Many rentals offer private hot tubs, balconies, and scenic decks that make it easy to enjoy quiet time together.
Groups can rent larger homes or neighboring cabins and still be close to everything. Whether it is a girls’ trip, a multi-generational family vacation, or a reunion with friends, Estes Park gives everyone room to breathe while keeping the vibe relaxed.
6. Easy Access with a True Getaway Feel
One of the best parts about vacationing in Estes Park is how easy it is to get there without sacrificing that true getaway feeling. Unlike more remote mountain destinations that require hours of winding roads or multiple travel legs, Estes Park is just a 90-minute drive from Denver. That short distance makes a huge difference when you are traveling with kids, trying to make the most of a long weekend, or simply want a stress-free arrival.
Despite being close to a major metro area, Estes Park feels a world away once you arrive. The winding entrance roads climb into tree-lined valleys that instantly shift the pace. Instead of traffic and city noise, you are greeted with open skies, towering peaks, and fresh mountain air. There is no need for complicated itineraries or a jam-packed agenda. Everything feels more relaxed here, which is exactly what most people want from a summer break.
Because it is so accessible, it is also easy to invite others to join you. Friends and family can plan last-minute visits without worrying about a complicated journey. That makes group trips, reunions, or even surprise celebrations much simpler to pull off. If you want to unplug without going off-grid, Estes Park offers the perfect balance. It is close, but it does not feel close. You can drive in, settle in, and feel far from the noise without ever being too far from what you need.

The golden season of summer speeds by far too quickly and but we won’t tell you an untruth; we at Voyago Vacation Rentals are generally ready for the fall to arrive. When it does, you will too, when you see all that fall brings to an Estes Park vacation. The fiery colors of trees dressed in their finest fall apparel, the crisp bite of the air reminding us that the colder season is that much closer, and, for vacationers traveling in the last month of fall, the sight of the mountain coming to life again, its white slopes dotted with people dressed in their colorful ski clothing. Fall in Colorado is the season where even Mother Nature loses the capability for words and because Labor Day is the official kickoff to fall in Estes Park, this Estes Park Labor Day guide to all the fun you will have celebrating the holiday and then coming home to Voyago to relax with a cup of cocoa and a sigh of happiness will make you wish there were more seasons and holidays to celebrate!
So Long Summer!
The weather over Labor Day weekend is generally already leaning into fall, with high temperatures just barely reaching the 70s and nighttime lows dropping into the 40s. In other words, on this weekend, which is generally acknowledged as a farewell to summer, the weather is sure to be absolutely perfect! Sunshine is expected, good times are guaranteed, and although there won’t be any parades or fireworks shows that most summer holidays feature, you won’t want to celebrate anywhere else ever again. Start your first day in town with a hearty breakfast served at a long-time local favorite, the Big Horn (401 W Elkhorn Avenue), and prepare to enjoy a day of outdoor adventures you will never forget!
Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival, August 30 Through September 1, Bond Park
Estes Park Labor Day weekend has long been the weekend of arts & crafts, with the Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival bringing us joy for many years. Offering over 90 artists that hail from 17 states, this festival may be the only place you do your souvenir shopping. Featuring a variety of unique genres that include jewelry, fabric, metal, and, of course, the usual ones that include paint, photography, and pottery, this festival never fails to please. We love it so much that the chances you have already seen some of the best artists’ works hanging on the walls of your Voyago escape are pretty high. Also featuring live music, a children’s arts & crafts tent, a silent auction, and food and drink vendors, don’t be surprised if you find yourself returning for both days of the festival, just to make sure you have seen and experienced everything it has to offer!
What Kind of Adventures Can You Experience with a Visit to the Lake Estes Marina?
It’s true, the waters of Lake Estes are starting to get a little chilly on this last weekend of summer fun in Estes Park, but that shouldn’t mean you should stay away from the lake during your Labor Day adventures. Rent kayaks for the family and spend the day paddling around the clear waters, or add a bit of whimsy to your paddling adventures by renting a pedal boat instead! Also, renting canoes, pontoon boats, fishing boats, and paddleboards, you might want to plan at least one day of your getaway hanging out at Lake Estes and discovering all the watery adventures you will enjoy during your stay!
Take a Hike!
This will be one of the last weekends that the trees will still be in full canopy and the stunning beauty of the Estes Park landscape in full bloom deserves a closer look and the moderate temperatures making an end of summer hike the best of ideas. The Emerald Lake Trail is our favorite, lasting just 3.2 miles out and back and leading hikers through the most stunning Estes Park countryside. The trail cuts through the Tyndall Gorge, leading the way to Emerald Lake where, if you bring your gear, you can engage in a little fishing fun before turning around and heading back into town. There is a nearly 700 foot elevation gain, so this hike is a moderate one, but the views you will see of the mountain peaks and the Tyndall glacier will make the extra effort worth it!
Barbecues in the Daytime, Hot Tubs and Firepits at Night
Enjoying the best of both summer and fall is something that comes comfortably and easily at home with Voyago Vacation Rentals. Our seasonal rentals in Estes Park will provide summer fun (family barbecues) and fall excitement (firepits and hot tubs), ensuring that every minute of your stay will be one you wish never had to end! Reserve your favorite holiday weekend hideaway today!
Your summer vacation in Estes Park is sure to be filled with a blend of naturally exciting adventures and all the comforts of home, especially because you chose Voyago Vacation Rentals for your accommodations, and we are sure that you have already begun making your plans. You want to hike along the trails that traverse the area, take photos of the stunning countryside from scenic vantage points, and you can’t wait to submerge yourself in the bubbling depths of the hot tub you saw on the back deck of your Colorado sanctuary. All of this is wonderful, and because we want to make sure that you can do it all during your stay, we have created this guide to five Estes Park activities you may not have known you could do during your Estes Park adventures.
Elevated Shopping Adventures on Elkhorn Avenue
Chances are you have given some thought to the shopping you will do on while vacation, but you probably didn’t go any deeper than imagining the souvenirs you could buy or the new hiking boots you might purchase at a sporting goods store. And although you can do both, Rocky Mountain Souvenirs and Outdoor World are two excellent local shops on Elkhorn. You can also shop at charming boutiques (The Lazy Moose), explore gift and home décor shops (Trendz), and discover new artists while picking up a piece that you never knew you needed to complete the décor in your office (Aspen & Evergreen Gallery).
Walk in the Footsteps of the King of Horror
For many of a certain generation, horror books and movies had to have been the creation of the King of Horror, Stephen King. And if your first rated R movie was The Shining, we think you will turn fangirl (or fanboy!) when you realize that the entire premise of that movie was based on his stay at the Stanley, right here in Estes Park. Rumored to be extremely haunted, the Stanley capitalizes on its spooky reputation by offering ghost tours and paranormal investigations, as well as other events that you can attend while staying comfortable and haunt-free in our Voyago Vacation Rentals Colorado sanctuaries!
Rock Climbing
If you have watched climbers scaling granite cliffs, seemingly precariously perched as they seek hand holds and foot holds in the rock and thought to yourself, “I could do that,” your Estes Park getaway is the perfect time to put that theory in practice. The Kent Mountain Adventure Center, located at 1230 Big Thompson Avenue, offers guided rock climbing tours, helping climbers enjoy an adventure they will never forget. Can you imagine the look on your friends and family’s faces when they see pictures of you precariously perched on a wall of granite? An Estes Park vacation will make you a hero in their eyes!
Learn All About Western Ranch Life
The MacGregor Ranch Museum, built in 1873 and located at 180 MacGregor Lane, is the original homestead of three generations of ranchers. Offering guide ranch tours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and guided ranch and barn tours on Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays, visitors will be fascinated at this peek into the wild west and maybe surprised to learn that the MacGregor Ranch is still an active and working ranch today. Their meat is known throughout the nation, sold by the quarter, half, and whole cow, and every season they always sell out before the year is half gone!
Explore How Rustic and Luxury Can Go Hand in Hand
When you think of a cabin in the woods, you probably imagine cramped spaces, little light, and wood paneling that may have been on the walls since the 60s, but when you choose a Voyago Vacation Rentals cabin in Estes Park, you couldn’t be further from the truth. Our cabins are light, bright, and spacious, offering vaulted ceilings and walls of windows that let in the most breathtaking views in the state. Everywhere you turn you will discover some new luxury, a state of the art television mounted above the mantel of what may be a gas fireplace in the living rooms, big named appliances in kitchens that may feature center islands with waterfall countertops, and steam showerheads and vessel sinks in the bathrooms, and fireplaces in primary suites. Some may offer coffee bars, others may offer a welcome basket with a nice bottle of wine, and all will feature views that will make you lose track of what you were thinking about when you first walked up to the window.

Estes Park is more than just a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s a destination in its own right with a network of scenic trails that appeal to every kind of traveler. Whether you’re here to challenge yourself on alpine hikes or take a slow walk through a valley surrounded by mountains, enjoy a wide variety of experiences, walking and hiking in Estes Park. This guide will walk you through what to expect, where to go, and how to make the most of your time on the trails in one of Colorado’s most beloved destinations.
Start With In-Town Estes Park Hiking Trails
You don’t need to venture far from downtown to get a solid walk in. The Lake Estes Trail is one of the most accessible options for visitors. This flat four-mile loop around Lake Estes gives you a wide-open view of the water and surrounding peaks. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a low-key stroll or jog and is especially popular in the early morning when wildlife like elk or waterfowl are often spotted. Benches line the path so you can take breaks and enjoy the view without rushing. The trail is paved, which makes it a reliable option for families with strollers or those who want an even surface.
Voyago vacation rentals are ideally located to give guests easy access to this trail and others like it. Many of our homes sit within a short drive or even walking distance to downtown Estes Park, so you can begin your day with a coffee and end it with a relaxing riverside stroll. The convenience of our properties means less time commuting and more time exploring. You’ll also be close to the Knoll-Willows Open Space, a short scenic trail with views of the Stanley Hotel and a peaceful escape that often gets overlooked by visitors.
Bond Park, located right in the center of town, also offers open green space and connects to quiet pedestrian paths that weave through charming residential neighborhoods.
If you forgot to pack essentials, Estes Park Mountain Shop is a great place to grab hiking socks, trekking poles, hydration packs and apparel. You’ll also find gear rentals and trail maps, along with advice from knowledgeable staff who hike these trails regularly. For footwear and outdoor clothing, Brownfield’s is a downtown staple that has been outfitting hikers for decades. Be sure to bring water, snacks, layered clothing, sun protection and comfortable hiking shoes for even these easier trails. You’ll appreciate being prepared once you see how easily a short walk can turn into an extended adventure.
Explore the Entrance Trails to the Park
Just outside of town, you’ll find a handful of trails that serve as warm-ups for Rocky Mountain National Park. One of the best known is the Lily Lake Trail. This gentle path is an easy loop that surrounds a small mountain lake with stunning views of Longs Peak. It’s an ideal stop if you’re easing into the altitude or just want a short walk before dinner. You can reach it without entering the fee area of the park and the parking area is usually easy to access early in the day. The area is especially photogenic at sunrise or sunset when the lake reflects the peaks.
Voyago guests often appreciate how close our vacation homes are to these popular entry Estes Park hiking trails. Staying just minutes from Hermit Park or Lily Lake gives you the flexibility to explore spontaneously without having to plan a full-day adventure. The Kruger Rock Trail in Hermit Park is a favorite for its moderate challenge and sweeping views. You’ll gain just enough elevation to feel the workout without overexerting yourself.
Another easy access trail is Twin Owls Trail, which starts at Lumpy Ridge and takes you through rock formations and quiet forest where you’ll rarely hear more than the breeze and birdsong. The Gem Lake Trail also begins here and rewards a short, steep climb with a small lake and excellent rock seating for a break or picnic.
If you’re looking for gear or last-minute essentials before heading out, stop by Warming House in town, which carries a well-curated selection of outdoor equipment, hydration tablets and trail-ready snacks. Their local staff often know the current trail conditions and can give you great advice based on your ability and schedule. No matter your fitness level, these trails offer a great introduction to Estes Park’s trail network and allow you to test your gear and stamina before moving deeper into the national park.
Hikes Inside Rocky Mountain National Park
Once you’re ready to explore the national park itself, you’ll find no shortage of well-maintained trails ranging from simple to strenuous. Bear Lake is a common first stop for new visitors. The trail around the lake is short and flat with picture-perfect views from nearly every angle. For a little more adventure, connect to nearby trails like Nymph Lake, Dream Lake or Emerald Lake. Each one adds a bit of distance and elevation, but the effort is rewarded with alpine scenery and clear glacial waters. These trails are among the most popular in the park for good reason, and can be accessed via a well-organized shuttle system during busy seasons.
If you’re up for more challenge, Alberta Falls is a can’t-miss destination from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. The trail passes through aspen groves and follows a tumbling creek before ending at a roaring waterfall. Sky Pond, while more intense, offers a full-day backcountry feel for seasoned hikers.
You’ll pass The Loch and Timberline Falls along the way before reaching the dramatic alpine basin where Sky Pond sits beneath jagged cliffs. The Fern Lake Trailhead is another launch point for excellent hikes, including the moderate Fern Falls and the longer Odessa Lake trail, both of which are less crowded and offer solitude for those willing to venture farther.
Stock up beforehand at Estes Park Mountain Shop or grab gourmet snacks at Country Market of Estes Park, which carries quality to-go food, trail mix and electrolyte drinks. After logging the miles, return to a cozy home with a hot tub, deck and everything you need to refuel and relax. You’ll feel the difference a well-located rental makes after spending a full day on your feet.
Wildlife Watching on the Trail
One of the standout experiences in Estes Park is how often you’ll encounter wildlife. Elk are the most common sight, especially during the summer and fall months. You might find them grazing near the golf course or even walking down a neighborhood street, but your chances of seeing them are even better on some of the lower elevation trails early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Deer, marmots and chipmunks are frequently seen, and birdwatchers will enjoy spotting mountain bluebirds, hawks, or hummingbirds depending on the season.
Stay near prime viewing areas by choosing a Voyago home close to open meadows, golf courses or the edges of the park. Some of our guests have spotted elk herds from their balconies or seen foxes wander across the yard. The trails around Moraine Park and Upper Beaver Meadows are especially good for wildlife watching.
Be sure to bring binoculars and a zoom lens for your camera. Pick up nature guides or wildlife books at Macdonald Book Shop in downtown Estes. As always, observe animals from a safe distance and respect posted signs to preserve both their space and your safety.
Stay Prepared for Summer Hiking in Estes Park
Weather in the Rockies can change quickly. A morning that starts sunny and warm can shift to thunderstorms by afternoon, especially in July and August. Start hikes early in the day to avoid weather surprises and always carry a light rain jacket. Even short hikes at altitude can feel intense if you’re not used to the elevation.
Drink plenty of water, take breaks often and pay attention to how your body feels. Cell service can be spotty in and around the park so download maps ahead of time and consider using GPS apps that work offline.
You’re also a short drive from gear shops and outfitters, making it easy to grab last-minute supplies or trail updates. When packing for a day on the trail, bring water bottles or a hydration pack, trail mix or energy bars, layered clothing, a hat and sunscreen and a basic first aid kit.
Lightweight trekking poles and good hiking shoes are useful on uneven terrain. With easy access to the best trails and local outfitters, your Voyago rental puts you in the perfect position to hike smart and stay comfortable.

When your 4th of July journey brings you to Estes Park for a cool mountain getaway, your kids may be worried about seeing the fireworks, but there is no need. Not only will the fireworks be spectacular, but we at Voyago Vacation Rentals have prepared this guide to all the top spots in town where the 4th of July Estes Park fireworks views will be prime!
Double the Beauty
Have you ever noticed that fireworks shows seem to be even more spectacular when viewed over the water? Maybe it is the naturally stunning surroundings, or maybe it is the peace that accompanies any large body of water, but we think it is the fact that you can enjoy double the beauty. With each boom and colorful spray of sparks that light up the sky, the reflection of the fireworks will be mirrored in the waters beneath, and that is another reason our Estes Park 4th of July Fireworks show is acclaimed as one of the best in the state. Exploding over the calm waters of Lake Estes, you and your family may not know where to look first, the sky or the lake, and this will be the best show you have experienced in so many years!
Bring a Chair, Bring a Blanket
The most obvious place to view the fireworks show will definitely be on the shores of Lake Estes and everyone is invited to attend this free event, with the big booms starting at 9:30. Come a little earlier, packing a picnic dinner or stop by the Post Mountain House, located at 333 E Wonderview Avenue for a fried chicken to go, enjoying either on your blanket that you have chosen to mark your fireworks viewing territory at the lake. Camp chairs can be used as well, you don’t have to worry about blocking anyone’s view of the sky, for those who find it a tad difficult to get up from the ground.
Work for the Views from Kruger Rock in Hermit Park
The big booms from a fireworks display can be off putting to some and if you are one of that some and like to hike, Hermit Park, located just outside of Estes Park has the ideal spot to see all the color, without the intensity of the big booms. Climbing carefully to the top of Kruger Rock and discovering panoramic views of the countryside, including the lake and the fireworks display will bring you one of those moments that you just can’t help but cherish. We just ask that you be careful on the climb back down as it will be fully dark and more difficult to see where you are stepping and if the climb worries you, don’t make it. Hermit Park offers many great spots along the way that will offer views as well. Families with young children may want to explore another avenue, one we will discuss in greater detail below!
Get Comfortable on the Balcony of Your Voyago Vacation Rentals Holiday Hideaway
For many, the joy of the fireworks show involves the crowds that surround them, watching people, delighting over new friends their children make, and just feeling a part of something bigger, but for you, comfort is key, and people are just a little too much. That doesn’t mean you have to miss the show altogether, though, as the best views are as close as the balcony that stretches across the back of your Mountain Village at Lake Estes holiday hideaway.
Not every escape will offer lake views, but you knew in advance to ensure yours does, and as you sit comfortably, sipping happily, and savoring the beauty of the sun setting over the lake in the final moments of daylight, you can congratulate yourself on making the best choice of all.
Many of these cozy cabins in Estes Park offer outdoor fireplaces, in case the nights get cool, and barbecue grills that will let you enjoy a traditional 4th of July celebration without having to fight traffic and crowds and for families with young children who are frightened by the booms, they will still be heard, but as you are a bit of a distance away, they won’t be as loud and scary!

When it is time to take a family vacation, we know you have to put a lot of thought into the planning of it, especially when your family involves people of all ages. Kids and parents don’t always agree on the food they should eat and they certainly don’t always agree on the activities they should participate in, but we at Voyago Vacation Rentals think we can help you come to a mutual agreement on both. This guide to the top kid-friendly Estes Park summer activities will cover all ages interests, and because you will also be coming home every night to our family friendly retreats, the good times will continue to infinity!
Mustang Mountain Coaster, 1180 Dry Gulch Road
Mountain coasters are a more parent friendly type of roller coaster, reaching high rates of speed and fun without doing all those topsy turvy upside down things that just don’t seem as fun after a certain age, and the Mustang Mountain Coaster is one that is sure to be enjoyed by kids of all ages! Offering a top speed of 25 mph, riders can determine if they want to take it a little slower, but trust us, once you are sitting in the driver’s seat, you will feel the need for speed! Riders must be at least 3 years old and as tall as 38 inches to ride with a parent, or at least 54 inches tall to ride alone. Tickets cost $20 for one ride and $35 for three, but if one of the riders is going to be a passenger, it will just cost $20 for unlimited rides.
Fun City, 455 Prospect Village Drive
Open during the summer months only, Fun City is a pint-sized amusement park offering a variety of kid-friendly rides, including the very unique water walking balls, a giant rainbow slide, and go-karts. New for 2025, they are adding a roller coaster they call the Gold Rush which is referred to as a Figure 8 Spinning Coaster, and we are super excited to try it out! Also featuring a gel blaster arena, similar to paintball but less painful and less messy, as the “paintballs” are actually water pellets, cooling you down quick when out in the summer sun! This park has been a local tradition since 1969 and we love the way they continue to add new activities to keep the park moving forward.
Open Air Adventure Park, 490 Prospect Village Drive
The Open Air Adventure Park offers fun for kids of all ages, featuring 32 aerial challenges and three levels of fun. The Aerial adventures include air board and horse saddle ziplines, navigation hanging chairs, as well as climbing ropes, and a variety of other Estes Park summer activities that will have your children scrambling around like the little monkeys they are. Costing $41 for adults (Yes, adults love this park as well!) and $35 for children under the age of 10, they also offer an evening adventure that is less time (just 90 minutes instead of 2 hours) with discounted prices of $35 and $25. Feeling extra during your time at the park? An axe throwing adventure has been added to the mix, and you can throw axes separately (must be 12 years of age or older) for $18 per person (45 minutes) or $30 per person (90 minutes).
Meadow Mini Golf, 840 Moraine Avenue
What is a family summer adventure without a session of mini golf? Our next activity takes us to the long standing Meadow miniature golf course. Featuring a Dutch theme of windmills and flowers, it is impossible to feel less than serene when putting on the turf grass, even if your game isn’t going your way. Formerly known as Tiny Town, this course has been our go-to spot for over 60 years, and our goal of getting a hole-in-one on the last hole has been accomplished a few times over the years, which, of course, meant we won a free round!
Ride a Kart & Cascade Creek Mini Golf
Go Karts & Miniature Golf? Sign us up immediately! And if you are of like mind, Ride a Cart is especially exciting, offering electric go karts in 2025, a golf simulator, bumper boats, bumper cars, water wars, a miniature train, even water wars and an arcade that you won’t be able to drag your kids out of, and yes, that could mean your husbands as well! Batting cages, an Extreme Trampoline, and, of course, a Munch Cart finishes up the delights offered at this wholesome family adventure park.
