Start With In-Town Estes Park Hiking Trails

You don’t need to venture far from downtown to get a solid walk in. The Lake Estes Trail is one of the most accessible options for visitors. This flat four-mile loop around Lake Estes gives you a wide-open view of the water and surrounding peaks. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a low-key stroll or jog and is especially popular in the early morning when wildlife like elk or waterfowl are often spotted. Benches line the path so you can take breaks and enjoy the view without rushing. The trail is paved, which makes it a reliable option for families with strollers or those who want an even surface.

Estes Park summer activities

Voyago vacation rentals are ideally located to give guests easy access to this trail and others like it. Many of our homes sit within a short drive or even walking distance to downtown Estes Park, so you can begin your day with a coffee and end it with a relaxing riverside stroll. The convenience of our properties means less time commuting and more time exploring. You’ll also be close to the Knoll-Willows Open Space, a short scenic trail with views of the Stanley Hotel and a peaceful escape that often gets overlooked by visitors.

Bond Park, located right in the center of town, also offers open green space and connects to quiet pedestrian paths that weave through charming residential neighborhoods.

If you forgot to pack essentials, Estes Park Mountain Shop is a great place to grab hiking socks, trekking poles, hydration packs and apparel. You’ll also find gear rentals and trail maps, along with advice from knowledgeable staff who hike these trails regularly. For footwear and outdoor clothing, Brownfield’s is a downtown staple that has been outfitting hikers for decades. Be sure to bring water, snacks, layered clothing, sun protection and comfortable hiking shoes for even these easier trails. You’ll appreciate being prepared once you see how easily a short walk can turn into an extended adventure.

Explore the Entrance Trails to the Park

Just outside of town, you’ll find a handful of trails that serve as warm-ups for Rocky Mountain National Park. One of the best known is the Lily Lake Trail. This gentle path is an easy loop that surrounds a small mountain lake with stunning views of Longs Peak. It’s an ideal stop if you’re easing into the altitude or just want a short walk before dinner. You can reach it without entering the fee area of the park and the parking area is usually easy to access early in the day. The area is especially photogenic at sunrise or sunset when the lake reflects the peaks.

Voyago guests often appreciate how close our vacation homes are to these popular entry Estes Park hiking trails. Staying just minutes from Hermit Park or Lily Lake gives you the flexibility to explore spontaneously without having to plan a full-day adventure. The Kruger Rock Trail in Hermit Park is a favorite for its moderate challenge and sweeping views. You’ll gain just enough elevation to feel the workout without overexerting yourself.

Another easy access trail is Twin Owls Trail, which starts at Lumpy Ridge and takes you through rock formations and quiet forest where you’ll rarely hear more than the breeze and birdsong. The Gem Lake Trail also begins here and rewards a short, steep climb with a small lake and excellent rock seating for a break or picnic.

If you’re looking for gear or last-minute essentials before heading out, stop by Warming House in town, which carries a well-curated selection of outdoor equipment, hydration tablets and trail-ready snacks. Their local staff often know the current trail conditions and can give you great advice based on your ability and schedule. No matter your fitness level, these trails offer a great introduction to Estes Park’s trail network and allow you to test your gear and stamina before moving deeper into the national park.

Hikes Inside Rocky Mountain National Park

Once you’re ready to explore the national park itself, you’ll find no shortage of well-maintained trails ranging from simple to strenuous. Bear Lake is a common first stop for new visitors. The trail around the lake is short and flat with picture-perfect views from nearly every angle. For a little more adventure, connect to nearby trails like Nymph Lake, Dream Lake or Emerald Lake. Each one adds a bit of distance and elevation, but the effort is rewarded with alpine scenery and clear glacial waters. These trails are among the most popular in the park for good reason, and can be accessed via a well-organized shuttle system during busy seasons.

If you’re up for more challenge, Alberta Falls is a can’t-miss destination from the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. The trail passes through aspen groves and follows a tumbling creek before ending at a roaring waterfall. Sky Pond, while more intense, offers a full-day backcountry feel for seasoned hikers.

You’ll pass The Loch and Timberline Falls along the way before reaching the dramatic alpine basin where Sky Pond sits beneath jagged cliffs. The Fern Lake Trailhead is another launch point for excellent hikes, including the moderate Fern Falls and the longer Odessa Lake trail, both of which are less crowded and offer solitude for those willing to venture farther.

Many Voyago vacation rentals are located close to park entrances, allowing you to beat the morning crowds and get a head start on these popular trails. Guests appreciate the ability to enjoy a hearty breakfast and coffee before hopping in the car for a short drive to the trailhead.

Stock up beforehand at Estes Park Mountain Shop or grab gourmet snacks at Country Market of Estes Park, which carries quality to-go food, trail mix and electrolyte drinks. After logging the miles, return to a cozy home with a hot tub, deck and everything you need to refuel and relax. You’ll feel the difference a well-located rental makes after spending a full day on your feet.

Wildlife Watching on the Trail

One of the standout experiences in Estes Park is how often you’ll encounter wildlife. Elk are the most common sight, especially during the summer and fall months. You might find them grazing near the golf course or even walking down a neighborhood street, but your chances of seeing them are even better on some of the lower elevation trails early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Deer, marmots and chipmunks are frequently seen, and birdwatchers will enjoy spotting mountain bluebirds, hawks, or hummingbirds depending on the season.

Stay near prime viewing areas by choosing a Voyago home close to open meadows, golf courses or the edges of the park. Some of our guests have spotted elk herds from their balconies or seen foxes wander across the yard. The trails around Moraine Park and Upper Beaver Meadows are especially good for wildlife watching.

Be sure to bring binoculars and a zoom lens for your camera. Pick up nature guides or wildlife books at Macdonald Book Shop in downtown Estes. As always, observe animals from a safe distance and respect posted signs to preserve both their space and your safety.

Stay Prepared for Summer Hiking in Estes Park

Weather in the Rockies can change quickly. A morning that starts sunny and warm can shift to thunderstorms by afternoon, especially in July and August. Start hikes early in the day to avoid weather surprises and always carry a light rain jacket. Even short hikes at altitude can feel intense if you’re not used to the elevation.

Drink plenty of water, take breaks often and pay attention to how your body feels. Cell service can be spotty in and around the park so download maps ahead of time and consider using GPS apps that work offline.

Surround Yourself With Picturesque Mountain Views!

Better Safe Than Sorry

A hike may feel like nothing more than a strenuous walk, but in the Rocky Mountains, it can be much more than that. Of course, there are the views, the panoramic beauty of the mountains, meadows, and grassy fields, but there is also heat in the summer months, wild animals that may look cuddly but should definitely be avoided, and extreme elevation changes that people with mobility issues may have trouble maneuvering. These tips we share below are some of the most important ones.

• Know Your Limitations – There are no sidewalks or stairs to be found on the trails that meander through the Estes Park area, but there can be elevation changes that can be thousands of feet, so knowing your limitations and doing your research to stick to easier trails is important. The website All Trails provides a great synopsis of the different trails in the area, but we will give you a little info on some of our favorites later down the page.

• Drink Plenty of Water – Summer temps in this region can get pretty high, and staying hydrated can ensure a successful hike. Additionally, we are in a high elevation area and most people don’t know that drinking lots of water before and after the hike can help lessen the chances of getting altitude sickness.

• Wear the Proper Gear – Make sure your shoes have good grip on the soles, that they fit well, and that they support your ankle; nothing puts a damper on the situation like a twisted or sprained ankle. Also, the sun in Estes Park can be quite ferocious, and sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat can be your best hiking gear ever.

• Stay on the Trails – Taking a picture of that butterfly flying through the wildflowers may offer up a frame-worthy shot, but the wild parts of the area also harbor wild creatures, including snakes and bears. Staying on the trails can keep you safe while also ensuring that you don’t get lost, especially as cell phones aren’t always going to have a signal out here.

Estes Park Hiking Trails for All Skill Levels

Now that you have a better understanding of the pitfalls that could be involved with a hike in the Estes Park area, it’s time to have fun. We’ve listed three of our favorites below, including an easy, moderate, and advanced trail to whet your interest.

• Alberta Falls Trail – Lasting just 2.6 miles out and back and offering an elevation gain of only 226 feet, the Alberta Falls Trail gives a lot of bang for the buck, featuring panoramic views, a waterfall, and a river that runs through it. This trail is very kid friendly.

• Emerald Lake Trail – Next on our list is Emerald Lake Trail, increasing in distance to 3.2 miles and offering an elevation gain of 702 feet, it is also another out-and-back trail. The reward at the halfway point of your hike is, of course, the appearance of Emerald Lake, offering clear waters and the feel of being on an alien planet, in part due to the trees in the area. This trail is also kid friendly and is one of the most popular hikes in Estes Park.

• Chasm Lake Trail – This last trail is, of course, the most difficult of the three listed. 8 miles long out and back and offering an elevation gain of 2552 feet, this is definitely not a hike that should be considered an option for young kids or people who aren’t in prime shape, but if you are in the best shape of your life and you want to enjoy an adventure you will never forget, this hike is for you.

Wildlife Watching and Photography

Rocky Mountain National Park is a sanctuary for many kinds of wildlife including elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and moose. Smaller creatures you might be able to see include pikas, marmots, and a variety of bird species also inhabit the park. These factors make Rocky Mountain National Park a prime location for wildlife watching and taking photos. Here are the two best spots to watch wildlife:

• Moraine Park: This wide, open valley is one of the best places in the park to view wildlife, especially during the elk rut in the fall. Elk love the meadows of Moraine Park, so you’ll have a front row seat to elk sightings as well as the unique opportunity to hear the calls of the elk during mating season.

• Horseshoe Park: Another prime spot for wildlife watching is Horseshoe Park. This area is known for its herds of elk and bighorn sheep. The park’s accessible nature and the presence of the Alluvial Fan – a stunning waterfall created by a historic flood – make it a popular spot for both wildlife watching and scenic views.

Experiencing the Park Beyond Hiking

Scenic drives, educational ranger-led programs, and star-gazing events give you different ways to see the park.

• Trail Ridge Road: Like taking a journey through the sky, Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved highway in North America, cresting at over 12,000 feet! This scenic drive elevates you to different alpine environments with stunning views, exhibits, and trailheads. It’s a must-do.

• Ranger-Led Programs: The park offers an array of ranger-led programs that provide insights into its geology, wildlife, and history. These programs, which include guided hikes, talks, and night sky programs, enrich your experience with educational and engaging content.

• Star Gazing: The clear, high-altitude skies of Rocky Mountain National Park offer exceptional star-gazing opportunities. The park occasionally hosts night sky programs at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and other locations, so you can marvel at the Milky Way and other celestial phenomena. Take a look at the universe through telescopes and with the guidance of astronomers.
